Teacher’s Guide
Teachers play an important role in making sure the All About Aerodynamics online program runs smoothly. Here is some additional information specific to the online presentation that will help ensure students get the most from their participation.
Presentation Differences
Three presentation options are available — Complete, Condensed, and Lite. The key differences have to do with the amount of science material covered and the total number of races.
We want to make sure students receive the core science instruction and that it is delivered within the same time constraints regardless of the number of students participating. The number of students participating only changes the program duration in the Complete version.
Student Groups
Teachers will need to divide students into 8 groups for the Lite and Condensed versions of the program and into 5 groups for the Complete version.
Racing Impact Timeline
After completing the science lessons and selecting cars, it will be time to race. The races are the best two out of three drag races on our 15-foot track.
A tournament bracket is created and cars race until a winner is determined.
Due to time constraints, the number of cars in the Lite and Condensed programs is limited to 8. Each team will pick one car. If the races come off without a hitch, the maximum amount of time spent racing will be about 21 minutes.
In the Complete program, each student selects their own car, thereby making the duration of the race tournament dependent upon the number of students participating. As you can see on the race timeline chart, the amount f time spent racing can range from 21 minutes for 8 students to 5 hours for 100 students.
Supplies
To fully participate in the online sessions, students will need approximately 9 sheets of paper and crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc. to make signs. Signs will be used by students to vote, respond to questions during review sessions, and select cars during the race tournament.
Class Sessions
Each session is 60-75 minutes long. A five-minute bathroom break occurs midway through each class.
Most of the instruction will be delivered within an hour. However, 15 extra minutes are allocated to ensure learning goals are met and account for any technical issues that may occur.
We also administer a pre-test during the first session and a post-test during the last session. Those tests extend the duration of those two specific classes to 75 minutes.
Condensed Group Choices
Each group in the Condensed program will be presented with different sets of 6 cars. Group members will vote to select a car to represent their team in the races.
Each of the car groups can be viewed and downloaded here.
We will need teachers to divide students into groups before the program begins and provide those names to the instructor via email.
Testing
Students participating in the Complete program will be given a pre-test and a post-test to gauge what they’ve learned. Kahoot! is used throughout the program for quiz administration and to review.
Homework Assignments
The Complete presentation has two assignments that need to be completed outside of class time.
ASSIGNMENT 1: Students will need to create 9 signs to be held up and used during the program. Each sign should contain one of the following: 1,2, Y, N, a circle, a diamond, a triangle, a square, and a question mark. Students can use the front and back sides of each sheet if they choose.
ASSIGNMENT 2: Following the 9 Complete science lessons, students will go to aaaerodynamics.com/aaacars to choose 1 of 450 Hot Wheels cars to find the one they would like to use in the races. The cars are numbered, so the students will simply need to come back with their car’s corresponding number.
Students in the Lite and Condensed programs can make signs prior to the beginning of class if the teacher or administrator chooses to have them do so.
